Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair Announces Winners

INDIANAPOLIS,  March 24, 2018-Over 170 students from around Indiana gathered at “The Center” (Heritage Research Group Corporate facility) to showcase their research conducted over months and sometimes years of work.  Sending 14 students to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) and handing out over 150 special awards, the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair (HSEF) selects from the best and brightest scientists, engineers, and mathematicians that Indiana has to offer.

Ankush Dhawan, a sophomore from Signature School in Newburgh received the Top Young Scientist prize of $500 sponsored by the Science and Education Foundation of Indiana, Inc. (SEFI).  In addition, Ankush will advance to the Intel ISEF in Pittsburgh, PA. His project, An Improved Method for Trace Level Arsenic Quantification in Water helps to identify toxins in our water supply. This research will make our drinking water safer and improve the overall wetland environment.

The following students will also present their projects at the Intel ISEF:

  • Amanda Wilson from Northwestern Sr High School in Kokomo
  • Bowen Jing from West Lafayette Jr/Sr High School in West Lafayette
  • Mitchell Sampson from Northview High School in Brazil
  • Anthony Weng from Terre Haute South Vigo High School in Terre Haute
  • Mary Sgroi From Trinity School At Greenlawn in South Bend
  • Victor Karwacinski From Trinity School At Greenlawn in South Bend
  • Jackson Boyle from Delta High School in Muncie
  • Nicole Segaran from Carmel High School in Carmel
  • Parker Jou from Carmel High School in Carmel
  • Sydney Hefty from DeKalb High School in Auburn
  • Akshaj Mishra from Signature School Inc in Evansville
  • Ankush Dhawan from Signature School Inc in Newburgh

“Student participation in science fairs is an excellent way to explore through inquiry-based learning. Indiana’s support and expansion of STEM education will lead to the discoveries and breakthroughs that are vital to our future,” said Glen Cook executive director of SEFI.

SEFI is a non-profit whose purpose is to encourage and assist young people to become scientists, engineers, and mathematicians and to practice their professions in Indiana.  It seeks to bring science to Indiana students in the K-12 level and then connect those science students to Indiana colleges and universities.
