National Chemistry Week Illustrated Poem Contest Winners to be Selected at Celebrate Science Indiana

Celebrate Science Indiana 2015 will be at the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fair Grounds on Saturday, October 3rd from 9:30 am to 5:30 am. The event is free and open to the public. Fairgrounds parking costs $5.00.

Each year as part of National Chemistry Week (October 19-24) activities, the American Chemical Society (ACS) sponsors an illustrated poem contest for students in Kindergarten – 12th grade. Participating ACS local sections can invite area students to compete.

This year’s theme is “Chemistry Colors Our World“, focusing on the chemistry of food colors and fireworks, rainbows, natural dyes and pigments, and more.

National Chemistry Week 2015

On Saturday, twenty three illustrated poems submitted by local students will be on display. Winners of the contest will be selected by six executive committee members of the Indiana section of the ACS and announced at 10:30 am.

Entries will be judged based upon relevance to and incorporation of the theme, word choice and imagery, colorful artwork, poem style, originality and creativity, and overall presentation.

Prizes include: four first place prices of $100, 1 second place price of $50, and one third place prize of $25. Prizes will not be awarded until November 7th during Chemistry Day at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
